Governments and postsecondary institutions across Ontario and Canada are advancing robust frameworks for transparency, accountability, and rights-based AI systems. Together, these initiatives set the standards for ethical design, governance, and deployment.

Ontario’s Trustworthy AI Framework

This is Ontario’s government-initiative to set out policies, guidance and practices to ensure that AI systems used by the provincial public sector are transparent, responsible, accountable and rights-based.

York University Centre for AI & Society

CAIS unites researchers at York who are collectively advancing the state of the art in the theory and practice of artificial intelligence (AI) systems, governance and public policy. Its approach places emphasis on how AI technologies operate when embedded in real-world contexts, interacting with humans and other technologies.  Its research focuses on AI systems that address societal priorities in health care, smart cities and sustainability, and are fair, explainable, reliable and trusted.

Artificial Intelligence and Data Act (AIDA)

This framework is a first step towards a new regulatory system designed to guide AI innovation in a positive direction, and to encourage the responsible adoption of AI technologies by Canadians and Canadian businesses.

University of Toronto Ethics of AI Lab

U of T’s Ethics of AI Lab offers an interdisciplinary approach to artificial intelligence in the context of private, public and political life. The lab offers several workshops, films, conferences, courses and opportunities for students at the undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral level.

Canadian AI Safety Institute Research Program at CIFAR

This program drives Canadian-led, multidisciplinary research to tackle both immediate and long-term safety challenges posed by advanced AI systems. By combining rapid-response projects with long-term collaboration, the CAISI Research Program at CIFAR fosters innovation, builds national research capacity, and develops practical tools for responsible AI development and deployment.

Toronto Metropolitan University Responsible Artificial Intelligence

Responsible Artificial Intelligence (RAI) is a six-year multidisciplinary, multi-sector training initiative to build sustainable connections, research, training and knowledge capacity and a pipeline of highly qualified trainees in Canada’s fastest-growing knowledge economy sector.

Responsible AI Adoption for Social Impact (RAISE)

A national initiative designed to help nonprofit organizations across Canada responsibly and effectively adopt AI, bringing together three complementary components: a responsible AI adoption framework co-developed with participating nonprofits to guide sector-wide implementation, led by the Human Feedback Foundation; an organizational AI adoption accelerator supporting five large nonprofits in aligning AI use with their missions, delivered by the Creative Destruction Lab; and targeted training for 500 nonprofit professionals to build AI literacy and integrate AI into fundraising, data stewardship, policy, and service delivery, delivered by The Dais.

Ontario Tech University School of Ethical Artificial Intelligence

Anchored in the university’s ethical innovation ethos, SEAI champions the principle that technology must serve people, not replace or diminish them. Every program, research initiative and partnership within the school will focus on ensuring AI systems are designed with privacy, data protection and an unwavering focus on minimizing algorithmic bias. In partnership with the Mindful Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (MAIRI), SEAI will drive the development of AI governance standards and national policy frameworks, advancing Ontario and Canada’s leadership in ethically designed and executed AI.
